1. 鹌鹑卤蛋 (an1chun lu3dan4) Quail spiced-corn egg

-What we wanted to give you was the ‘virgin boy’s pee egg’.  But thought a standard black slightly spiced egg would be better on your pallet, and you just have the story instead.

-The ‘virgin boy’s pee egg’ (童子蛋) is a real thing, and although not easily obtainable, it is still a custom in China.  It is a traditional dish of Dongyang, Zhejiang province and the process & product is considered a local intangible cultural heritage.

-Older women wait outside primary schools to collect the urine from boys not older than 10, and the eggs are soaked in it & cooked during a whole day.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it was believed that the urine from these aged boys had special healing effects. Now, we don’t know if anyone still believes in the healing effects, but it is kept up due to the tradition nevertheless.

-Note. This is NOT the pee egg, so rest easy enjoying a spicy one knowing you’re not eating that one.

-Maybe give one to your friends and after they’re halfway through, tell them that it is  the  pee egg instead.
